Election of the Speaker

Aside from the leaders of the three main parties, the role of speaker is possibly the most important of all. Significantly, the speaker has huge influence on how the business of parliament proceeds.

A suggestion therefore: the speaker of the Commons should be directly elected. Nominations would be made at the dissolution of the previous parliament, with nominated candidates included on all ballot papers nationally in a separate speaker section.
