What is our country for ?

The primary purpose of our country is to provide security, freedom and an environment of collective responsibility for the wellbeing of its citizens. Please note this phase ends in one day.

There is much resistance in this project  to Little Britain nationalism, but interestingly there seems to be a certain blindness to what I would refer to as ‘excessive liberal globalism’.

Encouraged along the path by the European project and the forces of globalization and human interconnectedness, we seem to have lost sight of ‘what is the purpose of our country ?’ ... or any country for that matter.

While there is absolutely a need to cooperate globally on the environment, conflict, poverty and trade, since when did it become received wisdom that our country should be a general global resource, available to all ?

In the new world order, the UK must accept it will feel less powerful than previously, but does that mean we should roll over and allow our land and resources to become a plaything of global corporations and ascendant nations ?

Should not citizens feel that their country is a place that has their best interests at heart, protected by the Constitution ?

I fear that if we cannot answer this simple question ‘what is our country for?’ then the whole exercise of producing a constitution may descend into muddle and confusion

Proposed summarisation of the idea:

The Constitution preamble should define '‘what is the purpose of our country ?’. It is important to attempt this as without it, there is no fundamental objective against which the document can be constructed. It would also be good to add "what is not the purpose of our country", to reduce the risk of multiple interpretations of our purpose.

I would appreciate any ideas on some punchy sentences for either of the two categories above ! This may be hard to pitch at the right level, but that doesn't mean it's not worth doing.

My starter for ten is:

The primary purpose of our country is to provide security, freedom and an environment of collective responsibility for the wellbeing of its citizens

So in simple language

Thank you for this steveg33. Could you please edit the original post and post the redraft at the top. And please only include the sentences you believe should be in the Constitution, and not the rational behind them. What I suggest you should post is this sentence you suggested: "The primary purpose of our country is to provide security, freedom and an environment of collective responsibility for the wellbeing of its citizens".

As it stands this idea is worded: The primary purpose of our country is to provide security, freedom and an environment of collective responsibility for the wellbeing of its citizens. Please note this phase ends in one day.

At this stage, no it would need to have a positive vote score to go forward, I'm afraid. But there are still 12 hours to go, who knows what might happen!
